Windows are the biggest source of heat loss from a home, and as the window sizes and numbers increase the problem worsens. Up to 30% of heat escapes via windows, effectively making them "thermal holes". Even double glazed windows allow heat loss due to heat transferences called convention and conduction.
Having properly installed and lined drapes can help to decrease heat loss by 40-50% in houses with double glazed windows, and 60% in homes with single glazed windows.
